Stay Out of the Sun to Help Prevent Skin Disease

When we are young, we really don’t think about the repercussions of our actions too far into the future. When we try to take our bike off that jump we’re not thinking about breaking our leg or the potential back issues we’ll have when we’re 40. All we think about is that jump in front of us and what we need to do to land our bike. That’s why it isn’t surprising that skin disease isn’t first and foremost on our minds when we are young. It is like Arizona heating and cooling-we don’t think about where the cold air comes from in our house, we just know that it gets there somehow. But with skin disease, the potential consequences are so high that we all need to be cognizant of the steps we should take to reduce it.

It is great to have a tan. Bronzed skin looks great, and can even be a sign of health and vibrancy to some. But the reality is that bronzed skin comes with a price. Skin cancer is very common in younger people that have a high exposure to the sun. While skin cancer is rarely fatal, it can be disfiguring in severe cases, and can make you more susceptible to other skin diseases. When you think about it, it doesn’t really make any sense not to put lots of sunscreen on today. Sure you may not have that bronzed look, but won’t you feel better 30 years down the road that you didn’t lay in the sun all day? It’s like the payoff on a geothermal air conditioning system. Sure it costs more today, but you will be reaping the benefits for many years down the road.

When you go outside, be sure to take proper precautions. Put clothing on as much skin as comfortable. If you can’t wear clothing, cover all exposed skin with high-SPF sunscreen. Drink lots of water, and duck into the shade when possible. If your home has a thermostat, Arizona heat isn’t so bad. But your body doesn’t have the ability to decide how much of the sun’s rays to take in. That is why you need to take the right steps to limiting your exposure to the sun and giving yourself a long life free of skin disease.

Unusual Skin Cancer Risk Identified

Here’s some unexpected news. If you spend lots of time behind the wheel, you might have an increased skin cancer risk based on the findings of a new study recently published.

Skin cancers on the face were found to happen most often on the left side (the side that’s next to the window when driving) among a group of almost 1,050 patients in Saint Louis. The association was most pronounced in men.

There are three major types of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma, the most deadly. All three types are going up, and can be avoided by being careful about exposure to the sun, and watching your skin for any suspicious changes.

If you see something troubling, you need to see a dermatologist right away so you can get a professional evaluation. Early detection is key.

Melanoma Diagnosis and Mole Monitoring

Melanomas are now being diagnosed far earlier than ever before. This is obviously good news as it means that the cure rate is improving. The reason that this is occurring is largely due to the availability of digital monitoring.

Examination

The skin examination should be carried out using an instrument known as the dermatoscope. This device allows the doctor to view the pigment under the skin and, in skilled hands, improves diagnostic accuracy. This means that less melanomas are missed and patients undergo less unnecessary excisions. The dermatoscope can either be hand held or attached to a digital monitoring machine. A hand held dermatoscope gives the clearest image to the doctor but a dermatoscope attached to a monitor allows the patient to see the lesion as well.
