Are we being exposed to asbestos?
Question by ninab: Are we being exposed to asbestos?
So I just asked my dad how old the blow dryer is that i’ve been using and he said about twenty years old. That means it was made in the eighties. Ive used it for a couple of years now. I’ve concerned because I read that hair dryers made in the eighties released asbestos fibers. I just threw the hair dryer away. Could my house be filled with asbestos and could it be all in my lungs from the hair dryer. The hair dryer brand is Sunbeam. Should I be worried about the possible asbestos exposure?

I didn’t think they used asbestos in hair dryers, and not in the 80s when they already knew about the problems of asbestos…
Anyways, asbestos is safe so long as the material intact and sealed. For instance, if you had a ceiling board with asbestos in it, so long as it was painted, there wasn’t a problem.
But if you cut into the board, for instance, you would knock some of the asbestos fibers into the air – and that’s when it becomes a problem.
So even if the hair dryer did contain asbestos, it wasn’t blowing fibers into the air (you’d be able to see them) and even then, the amount of exposure would still be fairly small. (how much asbestos could you shove into a hair dryer, anyways?) You’d do more damage to your lungs smoking a cigarette while having a chest x-ray at the doctor’s office.

the u s did 125 above ground nuclear tests in nevada . the entire mid west and east coast are still “hot’ with strontium 90 , cesium 120 , plutonium 140 , uranium 136 , etc , and will continue to be for the next several thousand years . in 20 years you could come down with mesothelioma or get hit by a bus tomorrow . we are all doomed .
The 2 only sunbeam hand hairdryers that did contain asbestos were the ‘single Northern hair dryer’, Model 1821, and this was replaced with the Model 1889 “Pocket Pistol” hair dryer in the late 1970′s.
Also, as far as I am aware – only the professionaire models contained asbestos, which were those mainly used by hairdressers.
If you can remember much about the hairdryer, then please let me know and I will try and identify it and give you confirmation that it was safe.
You are right to ask this question, as old appliances in particular can omit asbestos fibers. This is due to the asbestos becoming friable (crumbly with age)
I will post an article Re. this on my blog,
