Are PMG gas masks reliable? More importantly, how do you tell if the filter contains asbestos?

Question by John Doe: Are PMG gas masks reliable? More importantly, how do you tell if the filter contains asbestos?

I recently bought a PMG model gas mask from a dealer on ebay. He was unsure as to the age, and didn’t seem to know if the filter contained asbestos. I am aware of the years in which the asbestos would have been used, but am not able to date the canister. I’m just using the mask for Halloween, but I thought it would be cool to know if it would actually work.
PMG is not a WWII gas mask, it began manufacturing in the 70′s.

Most WW2 Gas masks contained asbestos. This will be in the filter.
