The price will depend on your location, the size of your garage and how many layers of shingles are currently on the roof. You may want to get more than one estimate, call a respected roofing company and when you select the one be sure you know the quality of the shingles that will be used as replacement, how much of the clean up they will do, when they will start and when they will finish and if they will run a magnet over the area to be sure there are no loose nails left behind.
Be sure that you have a clear contract. If the roof has been leaking you may have to have some of the decking boards replaced and this could cost extra.
You are right to be careful, sometimes everyone who owns a hammer thinks he is a roofer, so get references from friends and neighbors if you can.

you don,t have asbestos shingles, there asphalt,
shingles were not made from it,
it was used in pipe insulation, and on boilers,
so tell them to forget it, and get a regular roofing company to replace the roof,
It should be in the $1000 range for a small garage, but higher in the Northeast USA, cheaper down south. It also depends on the type of material, number of layers, etc. Your best bet is to get three quotes for the job to insure a fair price. Make sure each quoter knows you are getting three prices. Asbestos asphalt shingles will be cheaper than board asbestos. I hope you did have it tested and are just not relying on somebody’s guess that it is asbestos.
get several, at least three, estimates… and have the shingles tested to be sure they are or are NOT asbestos and YOU insist on seeing the test results with your address on them!!!!…….. if they are, the cost will be high as the company will have to go to great lengths to protect the environment and themselves while doing the work , as well as pay to dump what they tear off…. hazardous waste and all, you know….
if the shingles are NOT asbestos and there’s only one layer of them, you COULD have them roof over the existing shingles…. since it’s a garage, it’s not that big of a deal….. that way, you save the cost of a tear off and disposal….
same deal if they ARE asbestos but only the ONE layer… if you can have them shingle over the one layer up there, you save a lot…
every estimate you get should list cost for all things mentioned… the testing, the tear off and disposal, the number of shingles and the labor and CLEAN UP…..
here’s another post like yours… ignore the 65 hundred dollar quote…. he made a booboo….

William B. is on crack. There were most definitely roofing shingles containing asbestos manufactured. Asbestos removal requires trained HAZMAT workers. Asbestos is a hazardous material that can only be disposed of in lined landfills. Someone mentioned $1000 without even seeing the job……that’s ridiculous.
It’s going to be expensive. First you have to test the asbestos to determine if it is friable or non-friable. Hope that it’s non-friable…….which means there will not be a lot of fibers floating in the air during removal.
Make certain your contractor is certified to do asbestos abatement. The fines for violating asbestos removal rules can be very expensive. I was fined heavily for dumping what I thought were older asphalt shingles in a construction dumpster. Hard lesson to learn.
around $100 a square unless its a tearoff then it is considerably more many factors to consider
Asbestos is very expensive to remove and many precautions need to be implemented to do this properly. You’ll want to find a company that is certified to work with asbestos. You should expect to pay about $500-$600 per square. If it’s a single garage, maybe about $3,500-$4,500.
some folks charge an arm and a leg for asbestos removal and others do not. just be careful, many of the guys who do not charge much just hire spanish workers to tear it off without giving them the proper tools and techniques. all they have to do is prevent asbestos dust from becoming airborne. most guys remove the tiles slowly, spray them with water, bag them and take them to a proper place for disposal. it’s good to make sure that you’re not just saving money but also that things are being handled properly. whatever you do, don’t go back with a worse product. consider natural slate or clay which will have a similar look and last a couple hundred years. things like asphalt shingles and metal don’t last as long as they say. asphalt shingles spend hundreds of years in landfills but rarely see 15 years on a roof these days. also, asbestos can be repaired and coated in some cases. don’t hire an idoit. this means those who have been advertising to you. most roofing contractors just want money, they would rather your roof fail in a decade than last forever, they call it “job security”. try to find a local slater or someone who installs things like slate, clay, wood and copper. you’ll have a much better chance of being led to the truth rather than led to the slaughter. good luck!
